Friday Night Hunter's are excited to have Polaris Prize nominees...

The Sadies

On October 2, Yep Roc Records will release New Seasons, the first studio album from The Sadies since their acclaimed 2005 release, Favourite Colours. Recorded and co-produced with former Jayhawk Gary Louris, the Toronto foursome have managed to combine '60s country rock and psychedelia, C&W, surf, punk and cosmic American music and transform it into their own unique sound. The Sadies may sound like a lot of things, but no one quite sounds like the Sadies, or seems to do it quite so effortlessly.

While it’s been three years since their last studio album, the Sadies have been far from idle. In 2006 they released In Concert: Volume One, a live double disc featuring family and longtime friends and collaborators such as Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, Garth Hudson, Blue Rodeo, Gary Louris, Heavy Trash (Jon Spencer & Matt Verta-Ray), and the Good Brothers. The album captures the reckless energy, musicianship and love of collaboration that’s typified the Sadies’ nearly decade-long career and documents a band at the height of their performance power.

New Seasons was recorded in Canada and abroad around the band’s heavy touring schedule and introduces 13 new tracks (2 co-written with longtime friend Rick White of Elevator and Eric’s Trip) into the Sadies’ canon. Longtime fans will notice fewer instrumental numbers, with a greater emphasis on the brotherly harmonies of frontmen Dallas and Travis Good, abetted by the organic, intuitive playing of drummer Mike Belitsky and upright bassist Sean Dean. Elsewhere, Louris contributes backing vocals, The Good Brothers (Travis and Dallas’ father and uncles and Canadian country Hall of Fame legends) lay down autoharp, banjo and guitar, mom Margaret Good contributes backing vocals, and Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) adds piano to a track. But the contributions are subtle; this is arguably the purest Sadies’ album to date – a distillation of all the albums they grew up listening to into something alchemically different and totally their own.

Like another renowned group of Canadians, The Band, The Sadies have become as renowned for their collaborations as for their own releases: they’re the live band on Neko Case’s The Tigers Have Spoken and co-wrote songs with Case for her last album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and they’ve recorded albums with The Mekons’ Jon Langford (The Mayor of the Moon) cult soul legend Andre Williams (Red Dirt) and others. They’ve also got their trippy side project, The Unintended, featuring Rick White (Elevator, Eric’s Trip) and Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor.

The Sadies are at home on any stage they’re on, with a typical show lasting 35 to 40 songs, give or take five or ten. The band’s almost careless stage presence -- with the Good brothers looming in their tailored, embroidered suits -- and reckless punk energy make the songs fly by. Or maybe it’s the way they can stop and start on a dime, going from a cover of Johnny Paycheck’s “I’ve Got Someone to Kill” (which they recorded with R&B legend Andre Williams) to a stunning original rich with guitar textures and gorgeous vocal harmonies, all delivered with the casual ease of lighting another cigarette. With New Seasons, the Sadies have delivered an album where the songs and the vocal performances come first. If you’ve ever seen the Sadies, you already know they can all play their asses off anyway …

Nudie & The Turks

Formed in the spring of 2005, Nudie and the Turks took their vision first to the streets, busking anywhere and everywhere. This lead to an East Coast Music Awards showcase; no small feat for a three month old band.

After playing the clubs and a 6 month residency at the infamous Elm Avenue Social Club, they decided to follow Willie Nelson's Maritime Tour in 2006, busking for the people going in, then playing a show in each city. The seed of the idea came from them doing the same at a George Jones show, where they met George backstage and had his fiddle player sit in out front. His wise advice was "do what's in your heart and good things will happen to you."

Four shows into the ten city tour, Billy English (Willie's percussionist/drummer) joined them, playing snare drum. They then got on the bus, hung out with band and crew, and were asked to play the end of tour party in St. John's. As well as seeing a few shows backstage, an invitation was extended to come to Texas to play Poodie Locke's (Willie's tour manager of 30 + years) club outside of Austin.

Since then Nudie and the Turks continue to keep busy playing the Maritimes, Ontario, Quebec & Western Canada.

They have showcased at the North by Northeast Festival, the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, the East Coast Music Awards as well as features on CBC Radio. The band will be showcasing at the North American Folk Alliance 2009 in Memphis, Tennessee.

The band has also finished their second CD "Looking For A Good Time", scheduled for release on May 3, 2008. After touring the Maritimes, Quebec & Ontario to promote it, on June 7, 2008 they will be featured on CBC Radio's Creators Corner, a studio session taped before an audience at CBC Halifax's Studio H.

If you haven't heard, there is a few local islanders in the running to win 10k from Pepsi.

They need your votes to win. Todd is currently sitting in second place, and Kate is in 14th. The top 3 vote getters get money. You can vote for ten things a day, so you can vote for both. Let's keep Todd in the top 3 and bump Kate up there!

Todd Stanley - open a permanent all-ages music venue/rehearsal hall in Charlottetown.

Goals
Provide a location for people to practice and rehearse music.
Provide professional equipment to people who can't afford to buy it.
Provide a permanent venue location for local and touring acts.
To help out in youth culture any way I can to make my town better.

Overview

Charlottetown Music Development will provide a stable location for local and touring acts to play to the all-ages music crowd in Charlottetown. It will also be fully equipped with quality gear for musicians and bands to rent per-hour as a rehearsal studio during the day. The location can also be able to provide on the spot live-recording, and live online broadcasts of music events. It will inspire bands to form, collaborate and grow. New musicians will emerge and the music community as well as the company will thrive.

Kate McKenna - Create an intelligent magazine for young women aged 14-19

Goals
To create a publication (magazine) geared towards teenage girls. To encourage criticism of media standards via in-depth feature pieces.
To fill a niche in the market of 'smart girl' magazines. To employ a handful of journalists and encourage Canadian writers.
To become financially self-sufficient within one fiscal year.

Overview

This magazine, called "Raspberry," would have national distribution and a keen online interface. Although it would be quarterly, internet presence would be consistently fresh.
The content of the magazine will aspire to mix Nylon with McSweeney's, only for a target Canadian audience of young females. Most importantly, the tone of the magazine wouldn't 'talk down' to its readership.
There's universal consensus that media standards do bad things to adolescents. However, most of the media skepticism seems to be geared towards an older audience (i.e. Jezebel.com). Similarly, there are a dearth of publications for young women that encourage reading, writing, critical thinking, and environmental awareness. Raspberry, via clever commentary and in-depth reporting from some of Canada's forefront young journalists, will aspire to make being smart and savvy cool, instead of taking backseat to boys and makeup.

Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees

"Ruby Jean & The Thoughtful Bees is an all-star team of Haligonian indie rockers making electro dance rock. As such, as hella-danceable as this offering is, it's got a little menace, swagger and sex appeal to it as well. The first thing I've fallen in lust with in 2009, this is a sweaty, dark, dingy, glorious record whose crunchy synths and hammering beats wrap around frontwoman extraordinaire Rebekah Higgs (that's Ruby Jean to you) and keep her warm enough to pierce you with superb bits of vocalization. Also, while You Don't Miss Me will be the hit, Trustfund is my favourite song of the young year."
